Hangover 2 movie review

A couple of weeks ago, I took my wife out for a grown-up movie night at our favorite local theater. The AMC 20 Mile Theater is just a couple of minutes from home. We love that theater. They have ample parking, I’ve never had to wait in line, the theaters are rarely full to capacity, so there’s plenty of places to sit, pretty much anytime you want. I’ve actually sat in that theater and took in a movie by myself before (during the latest show). Add to that a stand with all the full popcorn, soda, candy, all fully stocked, fresh and delicious, though not necessarily nutritious. They play all the latest movies even 3D so this is not like a “dollar theater” where everything is a month or two old. So I support this theater more than I normally would. I go to more movies than I have in years and buy popcorn and snacks because I want the theater to do well. On top of all that AMC has a STUBS program that makes this an even greater deal. If you haven’t gone to this theater, you must.

On to the review. I had seen the first Hangover movie and was unimpressed, save for a couple of moments which I can’t recall, but I am sure I liked a few moments. I did not think it was a really funny movie by any means. Somehow the premise of “I drank so much I can’t remember what I did last night” doesn’t seem like an entire movie premise. It seems like a Saturday Night Live sketch at best and served by a five minute sketch. But they made an entertaining, cohesive movie out of the first one. Fair enough. But a sequel? Well, it was mom and dad’s night out, so let’s go see this new movie everyone is talking about. Full disclosure – My wife had not seen the first one, but it mattered not I told her. They always make these sequel things so that the audience can just jump in. This proved to be true, however she fell asleep as the whole thing was unfunny and bored her.

Anyway, I don’t want to get into the specifics of the movie in case you have not seen it and want to. But I must share my opinions on this particular bizarre franchise. Again, I don’t get how you extend what is at best a five minute sketch into an entire movie. I also do not get how it all gets repeated in a second movie, because that’s all it is. The movie was gross, lame and over the top. There was more male anatomical exposure and suggestions of unnatural acts than reasonable. I find it increasingly odd that a story went a round a while ago that one of the stars at one point objected to Mel Gibson having a role in the movie on some grounds I can’t recall. Yet when I finally see this product this guy was trying to protect, theres drug usage, a smoking monkey, all types of lascivious scenarios to say the least, I wonder – no actually I don’t – but it’s really strange what goes on in Hollywood. This much is clear, the sum of two movies that in my opinion have been extended from a pretty played-out premise (5 min SNL sketch) has somehow managed to make around a quarter of a billion dollars. This also means that it is likely a third movie will likely be produced, which will probably make a lot of money too. I tried to like the movie. I really did..

I typically like movies that get bad reviews, because I feel that entertainment is why we even go see movies. Not every movie has to be life-changing. Sometimes we just want to see things blow up, or have a guy act completely crazy, or whatever. But this movie is just bad. If I had a rating system on here, a feature I’m thinking about, I would give this a 1/2 star.

SNOWSTORM!!!

Well, we got our first major snowstorm of the season.
Let me explain what happens on days like this. We typically find out the kids schools are closed on the news in the morning starting around 5am. In this case, we were aware this storm was coming for a few days ahead and our kids’ schools emailed us ahead of the planned “snow day”. Most everything is open and the roads are scraped by city crews and are drivable pretty much all the time. At least for the main part of Parker that is the case. Some friends of ours live in more rural parts and they get cleared out in due time.

Anyway Snow Days are things we love and live with. The kids and the dogs go play outside and I get a little (Really it’s a lot) exercise shoveling some snow. But that’s because I don’t have a snow blower, but I like that..

Anyway our good friend Bobbi McCreary shared this awesome Snow Ice Cream recipe, the kids made it – had some fun and it tasted really good.

Snow Ice Cream…
3 c snow. 1.4 cup sugar
2T Milk. 1tsp vanilla
Mix and enjoy add sprinkles for color….

So snow days are some of our favorite family times. And in a couple of days, yeah this was a big one- but in a couple of days the impact will be pretty much nothing as the snow melts away on the roads and parking lots. And in February this stuff will probably melt off in a few days.. To my Parker friends and readers – Go sled on a hill!!

Denver’s Museum of Nature and Science

On a recent afternoon, I ventured to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science in mid-Denver. This was about a 30 minute drive from Parker. The museum is geared towards kids and adults alike and has some really neat displays. We didn’t have time to go to one exhibit in particular, the Pirate exhibit. It is here for a limited time and we will be coming back to see it.

My kids loved the gem mine, the dinosaur section, and more…

They got to touch and feel actual fossils and see giant dinosaur displays it really was amazing. They also saw real wooly mammoth hair from an ongoing dig right here in Colorado. They also liked the mummy exhibit, where actual mummies and artifacts are on display. They also have a great space exhibit that the kids go crazy for. With a full planetarium inside, there is much for them to see and do. The kids were able to feel real meteors and neat exhibits on space technology, including infrared camera setups and a moon rover display. They also have a 3D projection globe that is just plain amazing. Go there and see it, buy a season pass and support the museum. It’s great!!!

Parker is one of the greatest places to live in Colorado and in my opinion, the whole country. The schools are great, the people are great, I love being close to Denver. My kids love it here.

Mild weather week in Parker

So much for the illusion of Colorado being a frozen tundra. We had a beautiful week of weather this week, with most days in the 60s and even a day where it was 70s. In February- that’s rather spring-like… Anyhow our family did not really get to enjoy it much. We all picked up a bug that wiped us all out all week long. Even now, we’re all still in the midst or recovering from it.. Pictured above is the community of Horse Creek, where we used to live. I managed to snap a pic during one of the nicer days.

The Franktown wildfire

Well, I sure picked a good week to be gone. While I was away for several days visiting family it seems a wildfire broke out in Franktown, just south of Parker. Residents of that town were evacuated while the blaze was battled. One nearby area known as The Pinery was evacuated. REALLY close to my neighborhood, but all turned out well as the blaze was contained.

On another note, it’s great to be back in Parker after a brief getaway. Very glad nobody was hurt by the fire.. I have a bunch of new stuff coming up for the site shortly.

Douglas County healthiest in Colorado

This was an interesting read. Apparently residents of this county report the highest marks in the state across a variety of health indicators. This just further reinforces the quality of medical care, the activity that the lifestyle here promotes, and the fact that people report well-being.

To me, something about having four real seasons helps that sense of well-being among other things. We had a beautiful 80+ degree day yesterday. I went off to see the HOP movie today with the kids at the 20 Mile Theater, boy it was packed! And it was a typical sunny Parker morning.. (By the way, the movie was fun, not the best but a fun movie ) – We walked out and the snow was just DRIVING. Somehow it wasn’t heavy and didn’t stick to the roads at all. Just a little winter visit that was over by early evening.. We’re in line for some more great weather just a couple of days from now. It’s funny someone once told me if you don’t like the weather in Colorado, wait for half an hour!

The Farmers Market – Downtown Parker

This time of year brings us a special treat as the Farmer’s Market in downtown Parker is in full swing. It’s open every Sunday on Main street where essentially two blocks or so are reserved for this weekly event. Good friends and family can be seen roaming the many things that are offered for sale, sample and display. One can find local crafts, arts, food, various home-made products and so on.

Some of our favorites are the root beer guy, where you buy a bottle full of craftsman-style rootbeer right from the barrel and bring your bottle back the next time for a refill. The last time there were some great vendors of Salsa, I can think of 5280 brand as the one i bought. The kids love the hawaiian Snow-Cones. I also bought a whole bag of the most beautiful locally grown fruits and veggies for 10 dollars – fill up the bag as much as you can ten bucks. We even saw Parker’s own Mystery Machine from Scooby Doo!

For the Best Burgers go to…

FIVE GUYS!!!!!!! Just a few miles outside of Parker is a shopping center ( @ Village on the Park ) with tons of stores and restaurants. Five Guys will always be my first choice.

It is famous in most parts of the country. The patties are big and always fresh. They cook it right after you order it! All of the fixings are free, the store is full of free PEANUTS, it has outdoor sitting, and the fries are really good. It doesn’t have shakes, but by the time you leave, you won’t even remember you wanted one.

My seven year old brother eats an adult size burger. We even went there for his birthday! My sisters (who are extremely picky) actually eat a whole burger. If you are looking for a burger place to eat at when you are picky, in a rush, in a mess, and it still tastes like food (GOOD food), go to Five Guys!
